July in the garden with Twigland
The Edible Garden
- Plant out vegetable seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, silverbeet, kale, celery, mizuna, pak choi and onion.
- Plant herbs such as coriander, parsley, thyme and mint.
- Plant garlic cloves now! Put them in the ground about 5cm down with the pointy tips poking upwards.
- Start preparing potato tubers for planting by encouraging sprouting. Set out seed potatoes in a warm and dry position and leave to sprout for 4-6 weeks.
- Sow vegetable seeds in trays in a warm, light position. Seeds sown now will develop into seedlings ready to transplant into the ground in early spring. Look for our Ican Chef's Choice premium seed range. Spinach, kale, silverbeet, radish, cabbage and lettuce can all be sown now.
- Get some strawberry plants in the ground! To ensure a good crop, the plants need to have a period of winter chilling.
- For established veges, feed with Ican Real Blood & Bone.
- Spray winter vegetables with Grosafe Freeflo Copper to prevent fungal disease.
- Lime empty beds or refresh with a generous helping of Twigland Super Compost.
- Watch for birds digging around in the garden looking for winter food. Protect seedlings with Bird Netting.
The Flower Garden
- Now is the time to plant fruit trees and shrubs. We have a huge range of all kinds of deciduous fruit trees for you to choose from. Pick a site in full sun which has protection from prevailing winds.
- Stake new trees well at planting time to enable roots to anchor themselves into the soil over the first few seasons.
- Prune established pipfruit trees this month. Cover cuts with Grosafe Organic Pruning Paste to protect against disease and insects. Avoid pruning almonds, peaches and plums in winter because it can spread the silver leaf virus. They can be pruned in summer to limit the spread of the virus.
- For deciduous trees, a spray of Grosafe Lime Sulphur will remove lichen and moss and also kills any lingering insects. Finish the winter clean up with a combination spray of Grosafe Freeflo Copper and Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil a couple of weeks later.
- Watch for initial green bud growth on stone fruits, then spray with Grosafe Freeflo Copper to prevent leaf curl and bladder plum infections.
- Raspberries, currants, gooseberries, blueberries, boysenberries, blackberries and guavas can be planted now too.
